The PCI/104 Express™ variant of the PC/104 small form factor provides a good transition between legacy applications which still have need for the older PCI stacking connector, but are also embracing the future-oriented capabilities of the PCI-Express stacking connector. This is commonly the case in 5-10 year old or more rugged embedded systems in military and industrial environments where upgrades to newer processors, sensors, operating systems, etc. is a necessity but are constrained by legacy hardware and equipment which is cost prohibitive to replace.
